Where To Find Support

When someone experiences substance use disorder (SUD), the effects can reach beyond the individual. Friends, family members, and loved ones may also experience stress, uncertainty, and concern while trying to understand how to help. Whether you are experiencing substance use yourself or supporting someone who is, finding the right resources can make a difference.

Finding Support for Yourself

For someone experiencing substance use disorder, reaching out for help can feel overwhelming. You may not know where to start or what options are available. Support can come in many forms, including counseling, treatment services, peer support groups, healthcare professionals, and trusted friends or family members.

You do not have to have everything figured out before asking for help. Sometimes, the first step is simply having a conversation with someone you trust.

Finding Support for Loved Ones

Supporting someone experiencing substance use disorder can be challenging, especially when you are unsure how to help. Friends and family members may experience feelings of frustration, worry, or helplessness. 1:1 conversations with that loved one, connecting with others that have similar experiences

Talking with a counselor, connecting with others who have similar experiences, or learning more about substance use disorder can help you better understand what your loved one may be experiencing. Supporting someone does not mean you have to carry everything on your own.

Knowing Where to Start

If you are unsure where to find help, government resources can be a useful starting point. SAMHSA’s FindTreatment.gov helps individuals locate treatment services in their area, while SAMHSA’s Find Support provides information for individuals and families navigating substance use and mental health challenges.

No matter which side of the experience you are on, you do not have to navigate it alone. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, and everyone deserves access to support, understanding, and encouragement.
