2025 Sees Stagnation in Minnesotan Overdose Deaths After Major Progress in 2024

In case you didn’t know, Minnesota saw a 26% drop in overdose deaths from 2023 to 2024, which was and remains very exciting progress! We can thank our communities for their efforts in adopting prevention strategies (such as our program!) and making naloxone more accessible to those who need it. Interestingly, we actually saw a 31% reduction of overdose deaths in greater Minnesota, paired with a 23% reduction in the metro, which shows that overdoses are not just localized to a few Minnesotan areas, either. Anyone can be affected by opioids, and we should all continue to give the opioid epidemic the attention it deserves. In fact, recent data from the Minnesota Department of Health shows that 2025 Minnesotan overdose deaths are about the same as they were around this time last year, meaning that we have both maintained but stagnated in our progress from 2024. For us this is a positive outcome, but it remains one that we want to help change for the better! Minnesotans must build on this growth, as we now know what is working: spreading awareness, utilizing prevention and recovery programs, and making naloxone available to all without stigma.
