Getting Ready for Back to School

Summer is officially over, and everyone is getting ready to head back to school. I know that school can be stressful, hard, and overwhelming at times. Getting back into a routine after a long summer can be an adjustment, and it is completely normal to need some time to get used to it.

As the school year begins, there are a few things that can help make the transition a little easier.

Get Back Into a Routine

One of the biggest changes when school starts is getting back into a regular schedule. Try to start adjusting your sleep schedule, meals, and daily routine before things get too busy. Having a routine can make mornings less stressful and help you feel more prepared for the day.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

School can come with a lot of pressure. Between homework, tests, activities, friendships, and everything else going on, it can sometimes feel like too much. If you’re struggling, talk to someone you trust. This could be a parent, teacher, counselor, coach, or another trusted adult.

Asking for help isn’t a sign that you aren’t capable. Sometimes, having someone listen or help you work through a problem can make a big difference.

Take Care of Yourself

It’s easy to focus so much on school that you forget to take care of yourself. Make time for sleep, meals, activities you enjoy, and time with people who support you. Taking breaks when you need them can also help you manage stress and stay focused.

Make healthy choices

A new school year can also bring new situations, new people, and new pressures. You may be around people making choices that you aren’t comfortable with, including choices involving alcohol, nicotine, or other substances. Remember that you don’t have to do something just because someone else is doing it.

If you are worried about a friend or someone you know, you don’t have to handle it alone. Reach out to a trusted adult or someone who can help. This could be a social worker or counselor. They are there to listen, support you, and help you figure out what to do next.

It’s Okay If Things Don’t Go Perfectly

The first day, first week, or even the first few months don’t have to be perfect. You might have a difficult day, fall behind on an assignment, have an argument with a friend, or feel overwhelmed. One bad day doesn’t define your entire school year.

As we head into a new school year, remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out. Take things one day at a time, look out for yourself and the people around you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Here’s to a safe, healthy, and successful school year!
